Not recognized as political prisoner in 8 years: Zardari Updated at: 1937 PST, Wednesday, June 16, 2010
KARACHI: President Asif Ali Zardari Wednesday said he was not recognized as political prisoner during the eight long years spent in detention but when Mian Nawaz Sharif was detained he was immediately called a political prisoner.
He was talking to the office bearers of Karachi Press Club and Karachi Union of Journalists here at Bilawal House.
The President said the 18th amendment along with the renaming of NWFP as Khyber-Pukhtoonkhwa besides NFC Award was got approved successfully despite dissention aired by ‘some elements’. If anyone had uttered ‘Khyber-Pukhtoonkhwa’ a decade ago he would have ended up behind bars, he added.
He said the incumbent government is pursuing a policy of reconciliation which was envisioned by Shaheed Benazir Bhutto who also held dialogue with former president Pervez Musharraf under the same policy.
The government is currently engaged in the effort for elimination of terrorism and extremism.
President Zardari directed the Sindh Government for issuance of loan on easy installments to the members of Karachi Press Club to enable them to build houses on their allotted plots.
