Scottish politicians face televised debate

Voters go to the polls to vote on a new UK government on 6 May

Representatives of Scotland's four main political parties are to appear in a televised debate later.

The Scottish Leaders' Debate at the Festival Theatre in Edinburgh will be broadcast on BBC Scotland.

First Minister Alex Salmond, who is not standing for election to Westminster, will represent the SNP.

Jim Murphy will appear for Labour, Orkney and Shetland candidate Alistair Carmichael for the Liberal Democrats and David Mundell for the Tories.

Mr Mundell is the candidate for Dumfriesshire, Clydesdale and Tweeddale - the only Scottish constituency to return a Conservative MP in the 2005 election.

The parties have four full campaigning days left until polling day and most will spend the day in the capital, before the debate takes place.

First time voters

The Conservatives have been touring all eleven of their target seats this weekend and will be in Edinburgh South West on Sunday.

Campaign manager David McLetchie and Jason Rust, the party's candidate, will highlight how the Conservatives would "launch a war on waste".

The Liberal Democrats will also be in Edinburgh - putting posters on lampposts in the North and Leith constituency.

Campaign chair Alistair Carmichael and candidate Kevin Lang will put up campaign signs.

The SNP will be focusing their efforts on first time voters in Edinburgh East.

Labour will be in East Renfrewshire and Aberdeen South - seats they hope to hold.

Jim Murphy will meet shoppers in the Avenue Shopping Centre, in Newton Mearns, while Iain Gray will join Anne Begg in the north east city.
