US singer Chris Brown has made further progress while on probation for his assault on ex-girlfriend Rihanna last year, a judge in Los Angeles has heard.

Brown's attorney said the R&B star had completed almost 300 hours of community service - roughly a fifth of the amount he is required to perform.

Laywer Mark Geragos said Brown had also attended all but one of 52 mandatory domestic violence counselling sessions.

Brown, 21, is due back in court on 26 August for another status hearing.

He was sentenced to five years of probation last August and six months of community labour after pleading guilty to assaulting Rihanna in their car on the eve of the 2009 Grammy Awards.

Brown, whose hits include Run It! and Kiss Kiss, later apologised for the attack, saying he was "very sad and very ashamed" of his actions.

Superior Court Judge Patricia Schnegg said on Thursday it appeared the singer was making progress and requested a formal probation report.

Geragos, whose previous clients include the late Michael Jackson, said Brown was expected to complete his counselling in October.
