
* Jumani says minister not provided security despite request
ISLAMABAD: Federal Religious Affairs Minister Hamid Saeed Kazmi was wounded and his driver killed on Wednesday when unidentified men attacked his car near GPO Chowk in sector G-6.
The minister was attacked by two gunmen riding a motorbike when he was passing through GPO Chowk after he had left his office.
According to an eyewitness, the men followed the minister’s car, which was not accompanied by any security escort, soon after he left his office, firing at his vehicle at the Shaheed-e-Millat Road, Senior Superintendent Police (SSP) Tahir Alam Khan said.
As a result of the firing, the minister’s driver, Muhammad Younis, was killed on the spot. The minister was shot in his left shin and his security guard was also seriously injured.
Also, Aabpara Police registered and sealed a first information report (FIR) against the unidentified gunmen who had attacked Kazmi. Police sources told Daily Times the FIR had been registered and its copy had been dispatched to a Joint Investigation Team.
Security: Separately, State Minister for Religious Affairs Shagufta Jumani revealed that Kazmi had written a letter to the Interior Ministry, around six months ago, asking them to provide a security escort for him but the ministry had taken no step in this regard. She said the minister had received threats to his life a few months ago and had informed the Interior Ministry
Meanwhile, President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani, separately, condemned the attack, saying that every effort would be made to arrest the perpetrators, APP reported. Link...
