NEW YORK — Serena Williams demolished Hungary's Melinda Czink 6-1, 6-1 in just 53 minutes to reach the third round of the US Open.
It was an intimidating performance from the American title-holder, who turned on the power from the first point and was merciless in her pursuit of a rapid win over a shell-shocked opponent.
Williams will next play Spain's Jose Maria Martinez Sanchez for a place in the last 16 and on the evidence of this performance it will be difficult for anyone to stop her winning a fourth US Open title and a 12th Grand Slam title overall.
"I kept my unforced errors low and I love playing at night here so it was great," she said.
"I played her a few weeks ago for the first time so I knew her game and I knew I had to play well."
Williams opened impressively and was 3-0 up after just 10 minutes of play in what was the first time the night session at the Arthur Ashe Stadium court had concluded with a women's game.
Czink opened her account by holding serve in the next game and put some pressure on the following Williams serve before the American held for a 4-1 lead.
The three-times former US Open champion opened her shoulders to break again in the sixth game and served out for the first set in just 28 minutes.
It was more of the same in the second set, with Williams unleashing her best shots to move out into a 4-0 lead before Czink managed to win a second game.
But two games later it was all over and the Hungarian looked glad to get off the court and into the safety of the locker room.
It was Williams's 20th win in Grand Slam events this year against just one loss - to eventual winner Svetlana Kuznetsova of Russia in the French Open quarter-finals. Link...
